Questions & Answers

Hans: is the make and model of the motorbike mandatory or can I also show up with another bike?

Of course you can still change the bike before the start of the rally. After the start, you can’t…

Robert: if you were choosing a bike for this rally what would be your first choice and why?

When I ride my favorite roads in the Alps, my best choice is a XBR500: I prefer the small roads with plenty of bends, typically South Tyrol, Trentino, Lombardia. However, the Alps are much more than that. Every year the largest motorcycle magazine in Europe (MOTORRAD) is doing a large test of new motorcycles in the Alps, called the Alpenmasters. There is one bike that won most competitions: the GS. This is not a surprise, it is probably the best allrounder and compromise for these roads. If I could choose, I’d take one. Or maybe a new Africa Twin. Because there is one asset that these bikes have: apart from the on-road performance, gravel roads pose no problem. Yes, there will be gravel roads. Not a must, but there will be great, classic gravel roads at all difficulty levels and for all tastes.

But: you can ride the ABR with any bike.

Jürgen: Sind auch Gespanne zugelassen? Are bikes with sidecars permitted?

Ja. Yes.

Jonathan: I have 2 friends who are not part of IBA who are keen to take up the challenge. Is this possible?

Yes, it is possible. However, it is highly recommended to practice some LD riding and rallying.

Eric: Will some form of satellite tracking be used to monitor riders? i.e. Spot or similar?

Riders will not be forced to carry a GPS tracker, but there will an incentive to do so and to share the track with the rally team and maybe the public.
